Detail
Foujita Tsuguharu (Léonard Foujita, 1886–1968, b. in Tokyo) had ambitions to be an artist from an early age. After graduating from the Tokyo Fine Arts School, Foujita moved to Paris in 1913, where he pursued his own unique style of painting while deepening his connections with Picasso, Modigliani and other artists. In his later years Foujita took French nationality and continued to create works until his death at the age of 81.
This exhibition introduces approximately 140 works of Foujita including some pieces being displayed in Japan for the first time, through seven perspectives, namely “self-expression”, “scenery”, “avant-garde”, “east and west”, “women”, “children”, and “angels and heaven”. Additionally, only at the Iwate exhibition venue, there are special display featuring on Foujita’s interactions with artists from Iwate prefecture, such as Sawada Tetsuro and Matsumoto Shunsuke.
