Detail

This is a retrospective exhibition of the work of Sawada Tetsuro (1919-1986, b. Iwate prefecture). Born in Morioka city, Sawada was immersed in painting from young and moved to Tokyo with the aim of becoming a painter. After the war, from his experiences of imprisonment in Siberia led him to shift the theme of his work to life in Siberia. From the late 1950s, he began abstract painting using Japanese ink, achieving success with solo exhibitions in New York. In his later years he produced a vast number of small paintings depicting fantastical scenes.
This exhibition brings together works from his school days to his later years, including some pieces being displayed for the first time. Additionally, the exhibition features Sawada's paintings and photographic materials from the collection of Frank Sherman, a supporter of postwar Japanese art as to unveil Sawada's interactions with Fujita Tsuguharu and other artists.
