Temporary Exhibitions

The Beloved Gods and Buddhas of Northeastern Japan

Date:
Apr. 8 - May 21, 2023
Location:
Temporary Exhibition Gallery

Detail

During the Edo period, Japanese temples enshrined as principal images graceful, golden Buddha statues made in Kamigata (Kansai area) and Edo, which served as symbols of Buddhist view of world.
On the other hand, small halls of temples, small shrines and private houses enshrined rustic simple statues of Gods and Buddhas, carved by local carpenters and monks. The statues were treasured by the people as they were a part of their daily lives. These statues, called Minkan-Butsu (local folk Buddhist statues), have been recently attracting great attention.
This exhibition brings together and introduce approximately 130 folk Buddhist statues in Tohoku region for the first time. We try to reexamine the essence of religious beliefs and artistic expression in Japan.
