- Temporary Exhibition Gallery
Detail
The pre-war period of the Shōwa era, when modernism and militarism were rapidly transforming the times, was the years of significant change for the Tōhoku region. People with a cutting-edge consciousness such as Bruno Taut, Yanagi Sōetsu and Charlotte Perriand visited the region in succession in search of the local architecture and household items necessary for daily life. In addition, the dramatically increased interests in folk toys and the activities of Kon Wajirō, the founder of “Kōgengaku (Modernology)”, exalted the Tōhoku region as a cradle of rich culture, which had been regarded as backward and marginal.
This exhibition will reevaluate the fascinating culture of Tōhoku through these multilayered "eyes".
