Temporary Exhibitions

Tartan

Apr. 13 - May 26, 2019

Detail

Regardless of age, gender, race and ethnicity, Tartan has been everyone’s favorite. We see Tartan in many scenes such as fashion, accessories, a variety of packaging products and interior decor. Having said so, we seem to be unaware of “what Tartan is”.
This exhibition aims to make a proper introduction about Tartan. We display as many as 110 kinds of Tartan fabric, which is the first attempt in Japan, in order to enjoy its wide variety of colors and designs. Also approximately 160 artworks and reference materials, including prints by Scottish caricatuarist John Kay and fashion design from the 19th century onward, introduce its history and background. We hope not only to unvail what Tartan is and what it means from several perspectives but to lead you to explore further possibilities and potentials in the world of Tartan
