YOROZU Tetsugoro 1885-1927

Apr.15,2017(Sat) - Jun.18,2017(Sun)
Temporary Exhibition Gallery

Yorozu Tetsugoro (1885-1927, b. Tsuchizawa, Iwate prefecture) is a painter who pursued his own expression as he desired and struggled to create his unique art world. He shined out brightest in the Taisho period when many distinctive artists came out.
It is 20 years since the last comprehensive retrospective of this artist was held. Meanwhile, empirical research on related materials such as his drawings and sketches, his illustrations and book designs, and his photographic glass dry plates advanced. At the same time, several cross-sectional exhibitions focusing on the culture of the Taisho period during which Yorozu was active were held and his artistic career has been examined from multilateral aspects.
The exhibition marks the 90th anniversary of Yorozu’s death. On display are approximately 350 works including not only representative examples of his oil paintings from his early years to later but his drawings, watercolor paintings, prints and reference materials. We hope to close in anew on the artist himself and the essence of the expressions he was aiming at.
