Masumura Hiroshi: Years with Atagoal, Katsushika Hokusai and Miyazawa Kenji

Jan. 3 - Feb. 17, 2019

Detail

Japanese manga artist, Masumura Hiroshi (1952- , b. Yamagata) has long developed his own fantasy world with unique characters of cats. His representative manga series “Atagoal”, inspired by Miyazawa Kenji’s “Ihatov”, depicts a utopian world where cats and humans live as equals.
In 2005 Masumura started his color illustration series “Atagoal x Hokusai” where Atagoal characters integrated into the spectacular Ukiyo-e scenes drawn by Katsushika Hokusai. Masumura has provided commentary for each one of the illustrations, explaining the thoughts and processes involved in incorporating Atagoal elements.
The exhibition presents Masumura’s finest original color illustrations mainly from “Atagoal x Hokusai” series and Miyazawa Kenji’s children’s story series, along with manga manuscripts, idea sketches and props from the artist’s collection.
