Matsuda Matsuo: A Retrospective

Date:
Oct.03,2015(Sat) - Nov.29,2015(Sun)
Location:
Temporary Exhibition Gallery

Detail

Matsuda Matsuo (1937-2001, b. Rikuzen-Takata, Iwate prefecture) started his career as a painter in 1967 when he was thirty. Until the sudden illness forced him to give up painting in 1993 he settled to work in Iwaki, Fukushima prefecture and often exhibited his works in Iwaki and Morioka.

For him to paint pictures seems a means to look for what he was. He changed these subjects at times; a horizon and cloaked persons, a group of people huddling together in monochrome, and an abstract filled with black and white strokes all over its picture. However, eliminating unnecessary elements to stay focused on simple colors and forms, he tried to reach the essential image inside him.
This is the first retrospective of Matsuda in Iwate to trace the development of his artistic styles from his early years to the last.
