Detail

Pont-Aven in Brittany, France, loved by many painters of the 19th century, was regarded as a source of their artistic inspiration. The post-Impressionist Paul Gauguin was also one of them.
Gauguin spent a few years in the village in company with Paul Sérusier, Émile Bernard and other painters to explore the new expression of painting. They chose native religion and unique culture of Brittany as theme and painted them in a style with flat forms separated by dark contours.
This exhibition introduces 74 paintings by Pont-Aven school, on loan from the Musée des beaux-arts de Quimper and other museums. Five significant works by Gauguin are specially displayed for the first time in Japan.
