Taninaka Yasunori Retrospective

Date:
Apr.11,2015(Sat) - May.17,2015(Sun)
Location:
Temporary Exhibition Gallery

Detail

The exhibition retrospects the oeuvre of Taninaka Yasunori (1897-1946), a Japanese print artist who worked mainly in the 1930s. At the time, while Tokyo has turned modern by recovering from the Great Kanto earthquake disaster in 1923, the society inclined toward a war regime and anxiety was going to spread among the people. Taninaka watched the city and the time with his clear eyes and devoted himself to creating a number of woodblocks despite poverty and loneliness. We will find the real cityscape of modern Tokyo and Taninaka’s inner world of fantasy strangely coexisting in his unique images.
By displaying 300 works we try to re-examin his artistic career as well as its relevance to social trends at the time.
