Detail

The artist Antonio López (1936- ) is a leading contemporary proponent of Spanish realism. He was born in the farm town in the La Mancha region of Spain and started to study painting at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando at age 14. He already showed his talent in painting realistic images at that stage and since then has worked consistently in a realist manner with superior techniques.
López paints a wide variety of objects such as family portraits, flowers, interiors and urban landscapes. He is known for taking a great deal of time on his paintings, continuing to retouch them for as long as several years. He tries to paint every moment of the objects so as to evoke a sense of time. Thus the portraits convey the lapse of time which the models had spent until then, and the landscapes reveal the dry air of Spanish climate.
This is his first solo exhibition in Japan presenting about 65 carefully selected major works in the genres of painting, drawing, and sculpture, ranging from López’s early student work to the most recent. We hope you enjoy the quintessence of the Spanish master's art.
