Special Thematic Exhibition:
Miyazawa Kenji's Letters to His Friend, Hosaka Kanai

Miyazawa Kenji (1896-1933, b. Iwate prefecture), a poet and author of children's books, is one of the most popular figures in Japanese modern literature. This exhibition focuses on Miyazawa’s close friendship with Hosaka Kanai. While they were at the Morioka Agriculture and Forestry College they started a coterie magazine "Azalea" and published poems and short stories. Their deep friendship went on for years through communication by letter in spite of Hosaka's expulsion from the school.
By exhibiting Miyazawa's 72 letters to Hosaka along with Hosaka's sketchbooks we try not only to examin their friendship but also to spotlight their aspects as visual artists.
